Fasting in Ramadan — the basics

The fast

In the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn (just before Fajr) until sunset (Maghrib): no food, drink, or marital relations during daylight, paired with extra worship, charity, and self-restraint.

A fasting day

  • Suhur — a pre-dawn meal before Fajr, with the intention to fast.
  • Fast through the day; keep up prayers and good character.
  • Iftar — break the fast right after the Maghrib sunset, traditionally with dates and water.
There are exemptions and make-up rules (illness, travel, pregnancy, menstruation, and more). These are details to confirm with a teacher or a trusted fiqh resource — not something to guess.
