How to pray — one unit (rak‘ah)

One rak‘ah, simply

  • Stand facing the qibla (toward the Ka‘bah in Mecca), with the intention to pray.
  • Raise the hands and say "Allahu akbar" (God is greatest) to begin.
  • Recite Surah al-Fatihah (the opening chapter) while standing.
  • Bow (ruku‘), saying words of glorification of God.
  • Stand up straight again.
  • Prostrate (sujud) with the forehead on the ground; glorify God.
  • Sit briefly, then prostrate a second time. That completes one rak‘ah.
This is the universal shape; the exact words and small motions are best learned by watching and practicing with a knowledgeable Muslim, and they vary by madhhab. Audio/visual guides and 1-on-1 teachers are in the resource directory.
