Began his Islamic studies in Chicago — Arabic grammar (nahw), Hanafi fiqh, and usul al-fiqh — then took leave from medical school to study a traditional curriculum for several years in Syria and then Pakistan under senior scholars. Began training in tasawwuf in 1994 and was formally authorized (ijaza) to teach tasawwuf in July 2001. University of Chicago: B.A. (Biology, Arabic & Islamic Civilization) and M.D. (Pritzker School of Medicine); Professor of Pathology and practicing surgical pathologist at the University of Chicago, author of Fundamentals of Pathology, and founder of Pathoma.
