Protecting your peace is a real thing. It’s also a very good way to describe never speaking to your mother again. That’s why the swap works. Nobody accepts a lie that sounds like a lie. We accept the one that’s ninety percent true and quietly carries the ten percent we’d rather not look at. And the words only ever move in one direction. Nothing gets renamed from a virtue into a sin. Nothing ever gets harder to justify. None of this vocabulary arrived because we asked for it. Cruelty asks to be forgiven. Self-care never does. Nobody was careless. He was exactly where he had been told to be. She had been left behind by accident, asleep, after going back for a necklace. And the rumor that followed cost them both. Safwan (ra) held the rearguard, the position an army trusts with everything it cannot afford to lose. It’s also the position that left him alone on the road with the wife of the Prophet ﷺ. Being defended by the Prophet ﷺ himself didn’t settle what it cost him. What he did about that is the part almost nobody knows. Three Companions of the Prophet ﷺ made a grave mistake, and felt the world closing in on them. But they understood that there is no escape from that suffocating feeling except to turn back to Allah. The Prophet ﷺ taught us to read this every night (part of a longer du’a in Sahih al-Bakhari #6315) لاَ مَلْجَأَ وَلاَ مَنْجَا مِنْكَ إِلاَّ إِلَيْكَ “There is no fleeing from You, and there is no place of protection and safety except with You.” Memorize this and watch the full episode of The Firsts, “The Other Two Depressed Companions”, to learn what happened to Hilal (ra) and Murarah (ra). Allah has no need for your money or your time. The need in front of you is a door being held open, and the Qur’an is direct about what happens if you turn away from it. Listen to the latest khutbah, “The Good You Can't Make Up,” at the link in bio.
